Matching of Two Horoscopes

Matching of the two horoscopes are called "Porondam" and it's closest English meaning I can give for this word is feasibility. Definitely this is one of the earliest feasibility studies known to the mankind. Our ancestors though they lived thousand of years before us, clearly understood the influential factors in a long term relationship and feasibility factors or porondams were matched accordingly. As you see the most of these factors are valid even in the present day society.

When matching two horoscopes it is possible to match either 8, 10 or 20 separate aspects.

Out of those aspects, eight are the most important. Those 8 are called "Ashta Kutaya" or "Ata Porondama".

It is also possible to expand the 8 aspects to 10 aspects and match those, then such a matching is called "Dasa Porondama" or ten feasibilities. Included aspects are Nakshtra /Gana /Mahandra /Stree-Dheerga /Yoni /Rashi /Rashyadpathi /Vasya /Rajju & Vedha Porondam. Out of these 10 considerations at least five must be favorable for the couple to be compatible.

The most comprehensive tallying is "Visi Porondama" That is when you are tallying all 20 aspects and scrutinizing them to check whether they are matching with each other.

Generally the horoscope of a person can tell a lot of things about that persons life and his character. Usually it takes years of close relationship with a person to make a good judgement about him, but if you have his horoscope you can get the same knowledge about that person in a matter of an hour. Therefore the matching of the horoscopes can be considered as vital for a successful marriage.

The aspects taken in to account are the following and the first 10 aspects mentioned are the Dasa Porondam:

1. Nakath (Nakshtra) Porondama:

The most important aspect and crucial for a successful relationship between two persons. The Nakath porondama is the checking of whether the natures of the two marriage partners minds or in Sinhalese Sith ( total products of: perceptions, attitudes, outlook towards life, out side influences, education, intelligence, environment ect.) are compatible.

2. Gana (Type) Porondama:

It is about the wealth & development through marriage. There are three basic types of people according to their internal qualities, "Dava"(God) "Raksha"(Demon) and "Manusha"(Human) and checking is done to see whether the types of two partners are tallying. So that there is prosperity through cooperation.

3 Mahendra Porondama:

Is about the attachment and wellbeing through children from the prospective marriage and whether they will be good healthy and intelligent and delightful.

4. Stree Deerga Porondama:

It is about the general welfare and checks whether the male can satisfy the female.

5 Yoni Porondama:

This is also a very important aspect. For the ease of comparison, the basic behavior patterns of people were grouped according to certain animal species (and some times but not always, they even look like them). Certain species are considered friendly to each other and others are not. For an example "Mugati" (Mongoose) and "Sarpa" (Snake) yoni are considered not compatible because they tend to have a natural hatred towards each other. And it is true that some people just do not like certain people even though they are total strangers.

6 Rashi Porondama

Rashi means constellation. Rashi porondama is for checking and comparison of the status of the subconscious minds for compatibility. ( Subconsious mind is affected by habit forming deep rooted influential factors collected during the course of the past and present lives such as fears, talents ect.)

7 Rasi Adhipathi (Load of the Sign) Porondama

Checking and the comparison of the tendencies of the two subconscious minds in union and the thought processes. When the thought patterns are the same it is possible that on some occasions two people to have similar thoughts in their minds and say "Oh. I was thinking the same thing now."

8 Vashi Porondama

Vashi means attraction. Therefore the attraction between two partners is checked to see whether they can be attractive to each other in long term.

8 Rajju Porondama

Physical bond of the marriage is through the certain parts of the body starting from the head down to toe. This porondama is about the compatibility of those parts which are producing sensations to the partners.

10 Vedha Porondama

Vedha in sanskrit is breaking. This matching is carried out to check whether the bond between the man and wife is stable or easily breakable.

11 Linga Porondama

Meaning of the linga is gender and in this instance the behavior of the person, whether the person is manly, womanly or neutral. So if woman is womanly and man is manly then it is considered good.

12 Gothra Porondama

Meaning of the Gothra is tribe. Gothra Porondama is derived from the " Nakatha " and is about the Genealogy of the two partners. According to modern medical genetics, people with similar genetical make up are unsuitable for marriage because of the inherent malignant recessive genes which can produce harmful effects. Same is true in the Gothra porondama and if the two partners are of the same gothra then the Porondama is not matched. Therefore the matching is done to determine the genetic compatibility.

13 Varna Porondama

The meaning of the varna is cast and in this case the family background. It is needless to say that the family backgrounds are very important factor in a marriage.

14 Vruksha Porondama

Vruksha or the tree Porondama determines whether the physical strength of the partners are sufficient to bear good offspring like a tree bearing fruits.

15 Ayusha Porondama

Ayusha or life expectancy Porondama matches the life expectancy of the two partners in marriage. A calculation involving the "Nakatha" at birth is done and if the calculated residue of the male is higher than the calculated residue of the female, it is considered as a good result. Generally the person whose residue is higher is expected to live longer.

16 Pakshi Porondama

According to the birth "Nakatha" each person is allocated with a lucky sign in this case a bird. (That is how the saying "Pakshiya Raja Vela" has come to the use) If the both partners are having the same bird then it is considered - good (1), if the birds are friendly to each other then - normal (-) and if against - bad (0).

17 Pancha maha butha porondama

Patavi, Apo, Thejo, Vayo, And Akasha, (Solid, Liquid, Energy, Gaseousness and Space) are called pancha maha butha, beyond these five states of existence there is no other way for the matter or the energy to exist in the universe. Therefore the human body is also made of these four states of existence of the matter and the Space bound together in varying degrees of complexities. Pancha maha butha porondama is considering the compatibility of the basic constituencies of the two human bodies.

18 Dina porondama

Certain days of the week are allocated with certain qualities, (like Monday is the beginning of the working days of the week) and this porondama is about the compatibility of the days the partners are born.

19 Nadi Porondama

Nadi porondama considers the compatibility of the nerves of the two people, for an example if both partners get easily exited or angered then it is very difficult to maintain a long term relationship.

20 Graha Porondama

This is about the influences of the destiny or in other words karmic factors.(Karma has several meanings,{ like the term water, can represent ice, steam, vapor, ground water, snow, rain, etc.} in this case Karma can be defined as the - Out come or the result from the domain of reactions of past reaction forming actions. It is dynamic and can be changed up to certain extent by factors such as personal will. In other words a person has certain control of his or her own destiny and others) in the relationship and is checking to see whether this relationship is feasible to produce mutually beneficial outcomes.
